Starting up / Turning on your inverter

One crucial component of your solar system is the inverter. It’s the magic box that converts the direct current (DC) generated by your solar panels into alternating current (AC) that powers your home. So, how do you get it up and running? Let’s break it down.

Step 1: Safety First

Before you dive in, always ensure that you’re taking the necessary safety precautions. This means:

  1. Make sure the area around the inverter is dry. Remember, electricity and water don’t mix!
  2. Check if there are any visible damages to the inverter or cables.
  3. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment, like rubber-soled shoes.

Step 2: Powering Up

To turn on your inverter, follow these steps – you can also see brand specific guides below:

  1. Switch off the AC Switch: Take a look at the AC switch inside the switchboard – labelled Main Switch (inverter supply) or Solar Supply Main Switch. Please make sure this is in the down/off position before you start the steps below.
  2. Switch on the DC Isolator: On modern inverters the DC isolator is built into the inverter with a labelled switch on the bottom or left hand side of the inverter depending on model. Flick this switch to the ‘ON’ position.
  3. Activate the AC Isolator: This switch can be found either at the bottom of your inverter. Turn this to the ‘ON’ position. If your inverter is located next to your meter box, there will be NO AC Isolator to turn on.
  4. Turn Back On The AC Switch: turn on the ac switch inside the switchboard – labelled Main Switch (inverter supply) or Solar Supply Main Switch.
  5. Inverter Display: Your inverter should now start up, and its display should light up. Depending on the brand – be it Sungrow, Fronius, GoodWe or others – you’ll notice different readings and indicators. Generally, it will show the power output, the energy it’s generated for the day, and other operational stats.

Step 3: Check for Normal Operation

Once your inverter is on, it’s essential to ensure it’s working as it should.

  • Green Lights: Most inverters will have a green indicator light showing that they’re working correctly.
  • Read the Display: The display will give you an insight into how much electricity you’re producing. A sunny day will generally mean more energy production.

Know When to Seek Help
